Signs
When a lock is telling you it wants changing
- The key goes in but needs jiggling to turn. Wear in the cylinder pins, or dirt.
- The key turns only with the door pushed or pulled. The bolt is rubbing on the strike plate; often a repair, not a new lock.
- The cylinder stands out past the handle plate. Easier to snap. Ask about an anti-snap cylinder.
- You do not know who else has a key. New house, new tenants, keys lost and found again.
- It sat closed all summer and now grinds. Common in homes left for months; often recoverable.
If the lock has already failed and you cannot get in, do not wait for a booking: ring the emergency line.
What goes in
Cylinders, locks and repairs for an ordinary front door
-
A new euro cylinder
Measured on both sides of the door and fitted to length, so it does not stand proud. New keys handed over in their sealed card.
-
An anti-snap cylinder
The usual upgrade for a flat or villa door. For a door that has been forced, or a house that stands empty a long time, see the stronger options after a break-in.
-
A repair instead
A strike plate moved, a lock body freed, a multipoint on a wooden or armoured door adjusted. Cheaper than replacement when it does the job.
Aluminium, uPVC and sliding terrace doors have locks of a different kind, and a page of their own.

Lock changes that are particular to l’Alfàs
Before you fly north, or after you land
Norwegians are the largest foreign community in the town, with 2,626 on the register and, the town hall estimates, more than five thousand more unregistered. Many homes here open for one season and close for the next. A lock looked at before you go is a lock that turns on the day you come back. What to try when the key will not turn after months away.
Between seasons in a holiday let
With 1,219 tourist dwellings on the register in 2025, cylinders are often changed between one season and the next, when nobody can say how many keys went home in guests’ pockets. Owners and agencies have a page of their own.
Electronic locks on empty houses
A keypad or app lock suits a house that is often empty, as long as the batteries and the backup key are planned for. How to set one up before a long absence.
To book a day, ring or write through the contact page, with a photo of the lock from both sides if you can.
Asked before
Lock questions from people about to book
Does a stiff lock always mean a new one?
No. A cylinder that has stood unused for months can often be cleaned, lubricated with the right product and set working again. It is replaced when it is worn, damaged or no longer trusted.
How is an anti-snap cylinder different from the one I have?
A euro cylinder built to break at a sacrificial line rather than at the cam, so that snapping off the outside part does not open the door. If your cylinder sticks out past the handle plate, it is worth asking about.
We have just bought a resale house. Is changing the cylinders worth it?
Usually. You cannot know how many keys to the old cylinders went to builders, cleaners or past tenants. New cylinders are a small job and settle the question.
Can I keep my door and only change the lock?
Almost always. On most doors only the cylinder is changed; the lock body inside the door is replaced only when it is broken or worn out.
